Tips for Adapting to a New Fall Schedule

by Paula

Even if your kids aren’t in school yet, the end of summer can still mean a schedule reset for moms and little ones, too, whether it’s a change of day care or playgroups, new classes and activities starting, or even just the change in the weather. Sometime even small changes can seem big to your toddler, but experienced moms know that a few simple tricks like these can help everyone make it through the transition:

Talk it up. Many moms find it helpful if they start talking about upcoming changes long before they happen. If your child will be getting up at a different time or going to a new place, try talking about what will be different, and more importantly, what will be the same.

Stop by. If you’re going to be starting a new class or activity – even music lessons or a fun story time – try visiting the day care or activity center before the first day, so your child can become familiar with the surroundings and the people.

Read a book. Reading a book about a child who faced new places and new people can help little ones feel more at ease about doing it themselves. Chances are your local library has many books on this topic.

Ensure enough sleep. As most moms know, a toddler who hasn’t gotten enough sleep can be like a ticking time bomb. Keeping a regular sleep schedule can help keep meltdowns to a minimum and make almost any change go smoother.

Be patient. Since it may take a few weeks to settle into your new routine, it’s helpful to cut your little ones a little slack while they adapt. Try to remember that the change is probably harder on them than it is on you!
