Handling the Transition to Two

by Paula

Adding a new baby to your family can make life extra busy, especially if your first child is still very young. But experienced moms have found that following these simple steps can help keep your life and family running as smoothly as possible:

Set a schedule… A regular schedule gives your day some structure, and children of all ages like the predictability of knowing what they’re going to do and when they’re going to do it.

…but be flexible. With more than one child at home, unexpected events will undoubtedly come up, and that schedule will sometimes have to change. Trying to “go with the flow” can help moms reduce stress and work around the surprises. Good!

Be prepared. To make sure they’re ready for the daily demands of two children, some moms like to prepare as much as possible for each day by making bottles and formula ahead of time, setting up mini changing stations around the house, and restocking the diaper bag every night.

Relax your expectations. As long as you’re meeting your family’s needs, it’s okay to let the housework and other chores slide a little. Everyone really will understand!

Leave extra time. Most moms find it takes them longer to get out of the house with two in tow, so it can help to build in a little more time than you think you’ll need to get everyone ready and on their way.
