Experienced moms know that every baby’s skin is different, and what causes a rash on one little bottom may cause no harm to another. To help avoid rashes, try some of these mom-tested tips:
Dryness is key. Moisture is what causes the rash in the first place, so try to change your baby’s diaper as soon as you can after he or she soils it. Letting your baby’s skin dry completely before putting on the next diaper can also help.
Let it breathe. Fastening the diaper loosely so there’s a little extra room lets some fresh air circulate around your baby’s skin, which helps to keep it dry.
Create a barrier. Lots of moms like to apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or other protective ointment after each diaper change to keep moisture from reaching that soft little bottom.
Powder up. Some moms find that a small amount of powder can soothe their baby’s skin and help keep it drier. Top avoid your baby inhaling any powder, try sprinkling a little in your hand first and then applying it.
Stay sensitive. Consider fragrance-free natural diapers and wipes, which may be less likely to irritate your baby’s skin. Try to clean cloth diapers in fragrance-free detergents.
Pat softly when wet. Many moms find that patting baby’s skin dry after a bath – rather than rubbing it – helps dry the area without irritation.
