As your baby starts moving on her own, there may be new hazards to look out for since the last time you baby-proofed your surroundings. And with an older child also needing your attention, it’s more important than ever to make sure you home is secure. Before she starts crawling, take a look at these potential hazards to make sure your baby is safe and sound at home:
Kitchen. Install knob covers so little hands can’t turn on appliances, and add safety latches and locks to any drawer or door that has sharp cooking utensils or household cleaners.
Heavy furniture or objects. Secure anything that could tip over with wall straps to keep them from falling.
Toilets. Toilet locks help keep baby safe – and sanitary.
Stairways. It’s important to secure both the top and bottom of any stairs with baby gates. While it’s easy to think that the bottom of the stairs is safe, remember that what goes up often comes down!
Windows. Lots of moms like to install window guards on upper-level windows. It’s also smart to make sure any windows your children can reach stay shut, and that any blind cords are out of reach.
Faucets. Set the household water temperature low enough that your little ones can’t get burned if they accidentally turn the sink or bath water on by themselves.
Electrical outlets. Get as many outlet covers, plates or plugs as you need to keep curious babies from exploring this hazard.
Cleaning supplies. Try to keep these chemicals out of reach of children; if you have to store them where they can be reached, use cabinet locks and be sure they are kept in their original containers with the proper labels.
