Just when you thought you were finally caught up on your sleep, another baby comes along and you’re exhausted once again. Many moms feel the second baby is an especially challenging adjustment, because the quiet time they had after their first child goes to bed each night is now gone; filled with caring for a baby who doesn’t know what bedtime is yet.
For as long as there have been moms, there have been moms trying to deal with sleep deprivation. Here are some of the tricks they use to get by:
A short snooze. Some moms find that even a 20-minute nap helps them feel refreshed.
Watch what you eat. You might stay more alert by eating light and passing on heavy foods that leave you feeling drowsy.
Stockpile bottles. If your baby is bottle-fed, have you tried making enough bottles to last the entire night before you go to bed? You can refrigerate them and just warm them as needed as the night goes on, which takes less time – and lets you get more sleep.
Look the part. Even if they’re not getting any sleep, many moms say they feel better when they at least look like they’re well-rested. Cooled tea bags or cucumbers on the eyes will help de-puff them, and an eyelash curler will open up your eyes so much that no one will know how many times you got up last night.
Try not to dwell on it. We understand that new-baby lack of sleep can be frustrating, but do your best not to get all worked up about it. If you worry too much about not getting sleep, that anxiety will keep you awake even more.
