How to Soothe a Sleepless Baby

by Paula

The nighttime hours can feel especially long when your little one won’t sleep, especially when you’re trying to keep him quiet so he won’t wake an older sibling. But there are many simple ways to soothe your sleepless baby back to slumber quickly (we hope) and quietly. Many moms have had luck with time-tested tricks like these:

Try a new spot. If your baby’s not sleeping well in her crib, it’s perfectly fine to try moving her to another safe spot in your home. From your room to her room and places in between, many moms have discovered that the best place for their baby to sleep can change many times as she grows.

Move it. Gentle movements like rocking, swinging and walking can all help settle your baby down if he is having trouble staying asleep during the night.

A little lovey. A favorite stuffed animal, night-light or, if he’s old enough, blankie can be just the thing for a restless baby who needs a little comforting to settle back down.

Try a touch. Some moms like to give their babies a light massage to help soothe them and help them relax enough to go back to sleep. Just try not to make it too invigorating, though, or it will have the opposite effect.

Water wonder. While a midnight bath may be tough, some moms use water’s soothing qualities in other ways. Steam from a warm shower can relax your baby, and the sound of running water also has a calming effect.
